Final video presentation of the project’s mobilities/activities
Greek library school inauguration
In the last mobility of the project, as scheduled from the beginning, after multiple diligences and sharing of best practices, on May 11th, the library of the partner school in Crete was inaugurated, with great joy and motivation. This was a memorable day for all partners and for the Greek school, fulfilling one of the main objectives of the project, the founding of a library at the school in Agios Nikolaos.
Inauguration of a library in our school partner in Cerignola, Italy
The inauguration of the Erasmus partner school library in Cerignola was an extraordinary moment of gratification for everyone, as the founding of a library in the Greek partner school was planned as an appendix, and we succeeded in going beyond the objectives set.
The encouragement obtained by the dynamics of the project and the financial support obtained, added to the strong motivation of the Italian partners and the school headmaster, allowed the creation of an extraordinary library in the school of Cerignola.
Congratulations to the Italian partner team!
Learning scenarios produced for Europeana
The dynamics of this Erasmus project on the theme of the Holocaust led to an invitation from the Portuguese ambassador of Europeana to the main coordinator to develop two learning scenarios for the european biggest digital resource platform, Europeana. The learning scenarios focus on the figure of Anne Frank, inspired by the exploration of the work and implemented in all partner schools, and on Aristides de Sousa Mendes in the Portuguese school. Both scenarios have been submitted on behalf of the main project coordinator as group publications in Europeana are not possible.
This was a work that was elaborated with the collaboration of the different Erasmus partner teams and was successfully implemented. This project goes beyond the borders of the schools and their libraries, leaving two documents of learning scenarios available to all teachers in the European Union.
It is an important contribution of this project to human rights education and to the exploration of the Holocaust theme, accessible thanks to this Erasmus project.
Its demanding validation by Europeana is a synonym of the intense and quality work that has gone into the development of this project.

Reading marathon around the Diary of Anne Frank
The Reading Marathon took place on March 7, as part of the group’s library activities for the Reading Week (7 to 11 March) and mobilized many students and classes of the group, with the participation of 28 classes of EBS Canelas and four schools EB1 E EB1/JI (Ribes, Alquebre, Monte and Lagarteira). We had a special participation of the school library of Cerignola, Italy, our partner of school library of Erasmus Project “, and that has in common the reading and the exploration of this famous diary. The purpose of this initiative was to value the act of reading, aware that reading is a condition for all knowledge and a guarantee for the exercise of full citizenship. We know that this literacy is fundamental for our students and, therefore, we marked a continuous reading current for nine hours.
Teachers, parents/carers, operational and technical assistants, psychologists and an Italian school, partner of a school library Erasmus project on reading and values, joined this initiative.
This reading took place in person in the main school library and remotely, through Google Meet, with the schools in the school cluster that joined the activity, with parents and guardians and with the Italian school.
Although the readers were free to choose which text to read, most of the readings were from the book “The Diary of Anne Frank”, a work which is linked to the theme of the two Erasmus projects developed by the library in partnership with libraries from other European schools.
Reading this work is always surprising, due to the genius and sensitivity of this young Jewish girl who died at the age of 15 in a concentration camp, a few months before the end of World War II. Unfortunately, the necessary approach to human rights education has again become a priority in view of the developments taking place in Ukraine. And Anne Frank’s diary has become painfully topical (if ever it stopped being topical)…
We are left with a message of hope for new, more peaceful and tolerant times. May reading also unite us in a humanitarian current.
The graphic diary of Anne Frank: recommended reading.
The students of the 5th grade, Maria Vaz and Sofia Pinto, wanted to present to their schoolmates their reading of a cartoon about the Diary of Anne Frank. A book that they strongly recommend to their colleagues.

Holocaust books in the activity “10 minutes reading”
The “10 Minutes a Reading” activity began in the 2021-2022 school year, as a result of the application submitted by PLN 2027, encompassing school levels from 4th grade on. Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp and the 135th anniversary of the birth of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the works selected were: “The Diary of Anne Frank”, “The boys who fooled the Nazis”, “A workshop of dreams”, “The boy in striped pajamas” and “Aristides de Sousa Mendes”, works integrating the project “School libraries promoting readers, values, literacies, skills and inclusion” and proposed for the implementation of the activity “10 min to read”, also in all partner schools. In the operationalization of the project, the respective books were distributed to the classrooms and each teacher provides 10 minutes of his or her class time to read the proposed work. We conclude that the project created a dynamic among students, promoting contact with books and the regular practice of reading, an indispensable condition for the enjoyment of reading and reading skills.
International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust
Our school, through the History teachers and the School Library team, marked the International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust with several initiatives. An exhibition about the Holocaust was on display in the schools, main hall, under the responsibility of the History teachers, and
another on Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a unique figure in national history who had a distinguished role in saving more than 30 thousand Jews from Nazi persecution. These initiatives were developed in a collaborative way, and the school library team, which is currently developing two Erasmus projects focused on reading literary works about the Holocaust, associated itself to the commemoration. An exhibition on human rights was also on display in the hall. During the day, several classes from different levels of education, accompanied by their respective HGP or history teachers, visited the exhibition and took photos with a poster associated with the online campaign Instagram#weremember. Year 6 students had the opportunity to read aloud excerpts from the book “The boys who fooled the Nazis” to their year 8 peers.
Also in the school library, the 9th A students, accompanied by the History teacher, watched the French film “A difficult class”; which tells us about the memories of the Holocaust and its impact on today in youth. A film that leads us to reflect on human rights, inclusion and the challenges of education.
A day in which indifference towards one of the greatest human tragedies – the Holocaust – did not exist in the EBS of Canelas.
Reading activity “We can all read together”
“”We can all read together” began in April/22, in a collaborative activity between the teachers of portuguese and those who are part of the library/Erasmus team. The first session was based on the reading of the book “Anne Frank”; and the biographical analysis of the young Jewish girl in the historical context in which she lived – Holocaust and World War II.
In the second session, this students from other countries with reading difficulties watched the documentary ; Anne Frank and for the next sessions they plan to make a biographic padlet of Anne Frank, contextualized with the main historical events of this dark period of the 20th century history.
Anne Frank chronology
During the activity All Together We Can Read, the students read from Anne Frank’s diary and developed a chronological outline of the young woman’s life. They developed reading and digital skills at the same time in the school library.

“Read with the family”
The activity “Read with the family” was promoted by the partner schools in an interaction between the library!school and the families. Students and families came together around reading and the importance of books for everyone.
Scientific evidence has underlined the important role of families in education, with a relevant focus on activities that facilitate emergent reading and make possible moments of reading together. It has been proven that the earlier books and reading aloud enter children’s lives, the better.
Reading is one of the most important capacities of human beings and one of the main conditions for learning. In this context, the school and family have an added responsibility as to how they can jointly promote the acquisition of reading skills and make every child a reader for life.
“5 places of each country”
Erasmus projects are a source of coexistence and intercultural sharing. Following on from the previous mobility and in line with the students’ interest in getting to know the cultures of each country, a collective video was shown with five places chosen by each country to showcase themselves.
